Types of Train Services

Local (Futsū)

Stops at every station. No surcharge. Common for short-distance travel and connecting to hubs.

Rapid (Kaisoku)

Skips smaller stations to provide faster commuting over medium distances. No extra fee in most cases.

Limited Express (Tokkyū)

Longer-distance services with reserved seating and surcharges. Stops only at major stations; comfort-oriented.

On Limited Express and Shinkansen services, passengers must purchase the base fare plus a reserved-seat fee or Green Car supplement for higher-class accommodation. Local and Rapid services are generally covered by the base fare only.
