Major JR East Lines

Yamanote Line

A 34.5 km circular heavy-rail loop serving central Tokyo’s major hubs — Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ueno, Ikebukuro and more. Very frequent service, heavy commuter use.

Typical stops: Tokyo — Shinjuku — Shibuya — Ikebukuro — Ueno — Tokyo

Chūō Main Line (Tokyo area)

Trunk line running west from Tokyo; in the Tokyo area it operates as Chūō Rapid (fast commuter) and Chūō-Sōbu (local stops). Connects central Tokyo to suburbs and further west.

Jōban Line

Runs northeast from Ueno/Nippori through Ibaraki toward Sendai and coastal towns. Combines commuter services near Tokyo with longer-distance regional trains.

Keihin–Tōhoku & Yokohama Lines

Key north–south commuter corridors linking Saitama, central Tokyo, and Yokohama area. Frequent all-stops service on urban sections.
